Itinerary

  1. Day
    1
    Departure from Newcastle
    Newcastle, United Kingdom

Today you'll depart from Newcastle, boarding your home for the next few days, the comfortable ship Balmoral. Settle into your stylish and comfortable cabin and prepare for a day on board as you sail towards Norway.

There's plenty to do on board, allowing you to relax and enjoy your time at sea before your Norwegian adventure begins. There's a lively schedule of evening entertainment, chances to join dance or fitness classes, and time to simply kick back in the spa or in one of the elegant lounges.

There will also be a series of onboard lectures from experts, giving you insight into some of the landmarks you'll see over the course of your trip.

  2. Day
    2
    Nordfjord and Innvikfjord
    Nordfjord, Norway

Today you'll sail into Norway's sixth longest Norwegian fjord, Nordfjord.

Also known as one of the most picturesque, Nordfjord stretches from mainland Norway's westernmost point to the magnificent Jostedalsbreen, Europe's largest inland glacier.

The ocean entrance to the fjord is relatively flat, with low-lying lands and smooth beaches, but as you venture deeper, the landscapes become taller and isolated villages appear amongst a panorama of lush valleys, mighty cliffs and soaring alpine mountains.

  3. Day
    3
    Olden
    Olden, Norway

Today's visit is to Olden, an enchanting village located at the eastern end of the Nordfjord where it divides into three arms beneath the glaciers of the Jostedalsbreen. This beautiful and historic village sits among green meadows, towering cliff faces, and sparkling glacial waters.

In the centre of the village is the Old Church, and just a short journey away is the Briksdal Glacier, formed thousands of years ago. You'll have the opportunity to hike up to the glacier with an expert local geologist, who'll tell you more about the glacier and others like it in the region. While still breathtaking, Briksdal has retreated around 859m in the last century, a stark reminder of the effects of climate change.

  4. Day
    4
    Åndalsne, Langfjorden and Eresfjorden
    Åndalsnes, Norway

After breakfast on board it's time to explore Åndalsnes, often referred to as the 'Alp town by the fjord'.

Located at the mouth of the Rauma River and surrounded by snow-capped mountains, the town is in one of the most scenic areas of Norway, and a natural starting point for forest walks and hikes to magnificent viewpoints. You'll get the chance to ride the Rauma Railway, considered one of the best railway routes in Europe, since it was constructed 100 years ago

Deep within the magnificent Romsdalfjorden, two picturesque, lesser-known arms of one of Norway's most famous fjords - Langfjorden and Eresfjorden - are hidden away. Eresfjorden branches off from Langforden near the village of the same name and flows towards Eikesdalen, home to some of Norway's most spectacular landscapes, including some of Europe's tallest waterfalls.

You'll get to sail along these fjords, thanks to Balmoral's small size, enjoying breathtaking scenery as you go.

  5. Day
    5
    Ålesund
    Ålesund, Norway

Today's port of call is Ålesund, a city in the most spectacular of settings, built on three islands and has a magnificent mountainous backdrop.

The city was rebuilt in 1904 after a devastating fire, in the classic Art Nouveau style it's famous for today. You can learn more about this interesting architectural style from the displays at the Jugendstilsenteret, The National Art Nouveau Centre.

There's also a chance to brave the 418 steps to the summit of Mount Aksla, where you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the city, archipelago and Sunnmore Alps.

  6. Day
    6
    Day at sea
    At Sea, Norway,

Today will be spent at sea, as you sail from Norway back towards the UK. This time is yours to spend as you wish, perhaps relaxing in the onboard spa, taking a fitness class, or simply enjoying a drink in the Observatory Lounge and watching the world go by through the large windows.

You can also enjoy the packed schedule of evening entertainment, take part in a cooking or dance class, or listen to an informative lecture about the location you've visited in Norway.

  7. Day
    7
    Arrive back in Newcastle
    Newcastle, United Kingdom

Today you'll dock in Newcastle, where you'll disembark Balmoral as your Norwegian adventure comes to an end.
