You'll travel by train from London where you'll spend six nights at the in Hotel Astoria, a four-star lakefront hotel in Stresa, on a half-board basis. It's the ideal base for exploring the town's piazzas and venturing to the Borromean Palace on Lake Maggiore's island, Isola Bella.

This seven day adventure blends organised excursions to nearby beauty spots with plenty of time to explore Stresa at your own pace. A coach trip to the meticulously landscaped Botanical Gardens of Villa Taranto offers the chance to admire the kaleidoscopic blooms that dominate this world-class garden. Bursting with azaleas, rhododendrons, and camellias, as well as an abundance of citrus fruits and olives, the scent and colour of the gardens is a sensory treat. Afterwards, take a stroll along the lakeside promenade of Cannero Riviera.

You'll take a coach trip to Lake Orta, a smaller lake in the Piedmont region, where you can get to know the lakeside village of Orta San Giulio, admiring its romantic balustrades and balconies and shuttered buildings. Stop for a classic Italian gelato and gaze out to the single island, Isola San Guilio, that lies at the centre of Lake Orta.

Breakfasts and dinners are included, plus a special three-course lunch on your first full day in Stresa, toasting to a week in Italy with a glass of Prosecco.

    Villa Taranto Gardens and Cannero Riviera

    Spend a day exploring the beautiful Villa Taranto Gardens and the pretty lakeside resort of Cannero Riviera. Villa Taranto was founded in the 1930s by Scottish Captain McEacharn, who bought the villa to create the garden of his dreams on the shores of Lake Maggiore. In 1939, Captain McEacharn gifted the whole property to the Italian state, which is now regarded as one of the most important botanic gardens in the world. It has a wealth of colour and scents with eucalyptus, azaleas, rhododendrons, magnolias, port wine magnolias, maples, camellias, and dozens of tropical plants. Free time in the pleasant lakeside resort of Cannero Riviera follows. From the lakefront promenade, admire views of the islands of the Castles of Cannero and the town of Luino.
