Trains are the star of the show on this tour. Not only will you travel by train from London to Frankfurt for the first leg of your trip, you'll also get to explore the magnificent Dolomites and enjoy the scenic beauty that Northern Italy possesses, with rides on one of the steepest funicular railways in Europe, as well as a historic narrow-gauge railway.

Enjoy seven nights on the shores of Lake Molveno, with the waterside location providing serenity amidst the historic rail journeys, guided walks and historic castles you'll see on the tour. This region is also famed for its wine, which you'll get to try with a visit to a vineyard in Mezzocorona.

Further highlights include a boat trip across Lake Garda, taking it some of its towns and villages, and a cable car ride as you ascend Renon Mountain.

Itinerary

    Train from London to Frankfurt
    Frankfurt, Germany

    You'll depart London on the Eurostar to Brussels and continue to Frankfurt in Germany, where you'll check into The Frankfurt Hotel for an overnight stay with breakfast included.

    Cross the Brenner Pass to Lake Molveno
    Trento, Italy

    Today you'll leave Frankfurt and travel to Munich, then across the border from Germany through the Austrian Tirol to Innsbruck, where the train climbs the Brenner Pass over the Alps to around 3,000 feet. As you descend through alpine peaks and pass the sapphire lakes of South Tyrol, there are sensational views to enjoy before disembarking at Trento. A short transfer takes you to Hotel Miralago, your base for the next seven nights. Before your evening meal, there's time to settle in and explore Lake Molveno.

    Bolzano and the Renon Railway
    Bolzano, Italy

    Your day starts with a guided tour of Bolzano, a small yet culturally rich city. Next, ascend the modern gondola for 12 minutes to Soprabolzano, a village nestled on a high plateau on the Renon Mountain. Pause to appreciate the meadow and woodland scenery and superb views of the Dolomites.

    Next, board the Renon Railway. This small, hundred-year-old train transports passengers across the plateau on an 18-minute journey to Collalbo. Some of the original cars are still operational; others have been replaced with modern counterparts. On return to Bolzano, there's free time to explore the historic centre that's influenced by Italian, Austrian, and German culture.

    Today you'll explore Riva Del Garda, a bustling town located on the northern side of Lake Garda. A backdrop of lakes, valleys and mountains makes this a scenic spot for a stroll along an atmospheric network of winding streets. Board a boat for a trip across the lake to Limone, where there's free time before returning to the hotel.

    The Castle Train

    Sit back and relax on the Castle Train for a journey aboard line 700 between Mezzolombardo and Caldes, where a 13th-century castle dominates the apple-growing village. There's a guided tour of the castle before travelling by coach to Cles to visit Assessorile Palace.

    Mendola Mountain Funicular
    Caldaro, Italy

    The day starts with a visit to the elegant town of Madonna di Campiglio, nestled at an altitude of 1,550 metres between the Brenta Dolomites and the glaciers of Adamello and Presanella. You'll venture into the South Tirol of the Dolomites for a return journey on the Mendola Funicular Railway. It's one of the longest and steepest railways in Europe, offering unforgettable views as it climbs 1,363 metres up to the Mendola Pass. Free time in Caldaro follows, where there's a market square and lake to explore. A coach transports you to Mezzocorona for a guided visit and local wine-tasting.

    Take a walking tour of Trento before visiting splendid Buonconsiglio Castle. Considered one of the region's most important castles, Buonconsiglio is the residence of the Prince Bishops and a museum of arts, monuments, and collections.
