A two-week, no-fly cruise from Southampton to Iceland in September 2023, where TV weather presenter Carol Kirkwood makes a special guest appearance in Reykjavik

Iceland's geothermal springs, towering mountains, and dramatic fjords have been described as an otherworldly playground - and there's no better way to appreciate the diversity of the landscape than on a cruise.

The itinerary has been thoughtfully created to incorporate stops at several of Iceland's blockbuster attractions, including the dramatic Seyðisfjörður fjord, the Strokkur geyser, and the waterfalls of Gullfoss and Godafoss. You'll also cruise along Iceland's longest fjord, Eyjafjörður. There's also a trip to Akureyri, a location well-known for spotting humpback whales in their natural habitat.

You'll sail in style on the elegant Balmoral, a mid-sized ship in the Fred Olsen cruise fleet. Balmoral features impressive facilities, including a beautiful spa, two heated swimming pools, and a choice of restaurants. Over the two-week cruise, you can dress up on special formal evenings and for the Captain's Welcome Party.

The chance to meet popular TV weather presenter Carol Kirkwood makes this an extra memorable trip. Carol will join you on an optional excursion and host a talk answer questions in Reykjavik.

Itinerary

  1. Day
    1
    Depart from Southampton
    Southampton, United Kingdom

Today, you'll board Balmoral in Southampton. If you arrive early in Southampton, you can spend time exploring this port city. There are plenty of attractions to discover that showcase its fascinating history and local culture. Perhaps see the timber-framed treasures of the Old Town, including the Tudor House and Gardens, or explore nature trails and wetlands near the city before joining the ship.

  2. Days
    2-4
    At sea
    At Sea (Iceland), Iceland

You'll spend three days at sea on Balmoral as you sail to Iceland. This voyage is an opportunity to truly kick back and disconnect from the stresses of everyday life. Perhaps you'll spend time in the soothing surroundings of the Atlantis Spa or take a dip in one of the two heated saltwater pools and bubbling Jacuzzis.

There are various events and activities available as you sail, so you can get to know your fellow guests or enjoy time with friends and family. You can hone your artistic skills at the Olsen Studio, attend lectures about the region's flora and fauna, join the onboard book club, or play in deck-game tournaments like skittles and shuffleboard.

And when the lights go down on board Balmoral, you'll be treated to a selection of live shows ranging from music and cabaret to quick-fire stand-up comedy.

  3. Day
    5
    Seyðisfjörður and Borgarfjörður Eystri
    Seyðisfjörður, Iceland

Today you'll sail into Seyðisfjörður. Located in the Eastfjords of Iceland, Seyðisfjörður is considered one of Iceland's most picturesque towns, surrounded by valleys where 25 waterfalls cascade down into the lagoon at the head of the fjord.

Skalanes Nature Reserve is situated on the south side of the town and many seabirds, such as puffins or the black-tailed godwit, and cetaceans, including seals and porpoises, can be found here.

Sailing along the calm blue waters of the Seyðisfjörður fjord, you'll take in views of huge mountains, hills, and cliffs before the sound of thundering waterfalls captures your attention. This incredible display of nature is formed by the river Fjarðará as it cascades down to a lagoon at the head of the fjord.

You'll also sail into the beautiful Borgarfjörður Eystri fjord. A hiker's paradise, Borgarfjörður Eystri is renowned for its craggy shores, steep cliffs and the 1136-metre-high Dyrfjöll Mountains, which create an incredible backdrop as you as your ship sails the fjord's strikingly blue waters.

  4. Day
    6
    Akureyri, Cruising Eyjafjörður and Hrisey
    Akureyri, Iceland

Today, you'll arrive in the city of Akureyri after sailing through Eyjafjörður, Iceland's longest fjord.

Eyjafjörður is narrow, so as you sail along, you'll get closer to the surrounding natural landscapes, creating incredible photo opportunities.

The small city of Akureyri is the gateway to the breathtaking 'Waterfall of the Gods', Godafoss Waterfall. The waters around the fjord and coastline are a rich feeding ground for whales, particularly humpback whales.

Also on today's agenda is a visit to pretty Hrisey Island, known as the Pearl of the Eyjafjörður. Hrisey is Iceland's second largest island, yet only around 200 people live here in one tiny fishing village. Those who live on Hrisey share the flat green lands with about 40 bird species, including ptarmigans and Arctic terns. Framed by incredible mountainous landscapes and surrounded by the still waters of the Eyjafjörður, Hrisey is a delight to see as you sail.

    Meals - Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  5. Day
    7
    Ísafjörður
    Ísafjörður , Iceland

Today's stop is at Ísafjörður, on the peninsular of the Westfjords. With a backdrop of steep mountains, Ísafjörður has been one of Iceland's most important fishing and trading centres for over two centuries. You'll find a quaint old town of traditional wooden houses and reminders of Ísafjörður's rich maritime history.

From Ísafjörður, you'll set out to visit the spectacular Dynjandi waterfall, which cascades down the mountainside from a height of 100 metres. The area surrounding Ísafjörður is the most remote in Iceland, with many secluded valleys dotted with historic and isolated farms.

    Meals - Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  6. Days
    8-9
    Reykjavik
    Reykjavík, Iceland

Weather presenter Carol Kirkwood will join the ship as you arrive in Reykjavik. The world's most northerly capital city, Reykjavik is said to be the whale watching capital of Europe.

The city is within easy reach of the iconic Golden Circle trail to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Thingvellir, a keystone of Icelandic history. You'll also be close to Gullfoss, the 'Golden Waterfall', considered to be the most beautiful waterfall in the country. You could also opt to visit Geysir, geothermal hot springs, where you can see spouting geysers and bubbling mud pots.

Carol will give an insightful talk on her career and experiences as a weather presenter, and will be available to answer any of your questions.

Sheep farming is a big part of life on the Faroe Islands. The Faroese sheep are a distinct breed that live outdoors on the hills and clifftops year-round. Established sheep farmers produce wool to be made into clothing using traditional methods - you might be tempted to buy a snug Faroese-wool jumper as a souvenir of your time on these mysterious isles.
